1) Network Governance docs
Source: https://docs.hivemapper.com/welcome/network-governance
Selected excerpts from the official docs:
The Hivemapper Foundation is a Cayman Foundation Company Limited by Guarantee formed in 2022 and based in the Cayman Islands.
The Hivemapper Foundation is responsible for the proliferation of the Hivemapper Network and ongoing network token economics and issuance.
Over time, the foundation will take on many of the responsibilities currently held by employees of Bee Maps (Hivemapper Inc.), such as maintaining the decentralized mapping network and its underlying mapping technology. No executives from Bee Maps can hold positions in the Hivemapper Foundation at the same time.
The foundation will work with hardware manufacturers to create compatible Open Dashcam devices and establish a certification process for approving new hardware devices.
The Hivemapper Network uses a mechanism of governance called Map Improvement Proposals (also known as MIPs).
Additional signals from the source:
- This page is the strongest single reason to promote a separate entity note: it explicitly splits the Foundation from Bee Maps / Hivemapper Inc. and gives the Foundation responsibility for network proliferation, token economics, open technologies, hardware certification, and governance process.
- The MIP process matters because it makes the Foundation part of the official rule-change lane rather than just a community-facing grants wrapper.
2) HONEY token docs
Source: https://docs.hivemapper.com/honey-token/what-is-honey
Selected excerpts from the official docs:
There is a maximum supply of 10 billion HONEY tokens. Tokens were allocated as follows:
5% to the Hivemapper Foundation, which facilitates the ongoing management and success of the Hivemapper Network.
An on-chain marketplace between the Hivemapper Network’s contributors and customers is created through a Burn and Mint structure.
Map Improvement Proposal 15, finalized in April 2024, set the share of burned HONEY reissued to contributors at 25%, with the remaining 75% being permanently burned.
For a more detailed explanation of how Map Credits work, please review this explainer from the Hivemapper Foundation.
Additional signals from the source:
- The Foundation is visibly part of the token-economic operating shell, not only the community-governance story.
- The token docs tie HONEY allocation, MIP-driven emissions policy, and the burn-and-mint / map-credit explanation back to the Foundation, which is strong company-layer evidence.
3) Hivemapper Foundation homepage
Source: https://www.hivemapperfoundation.org/
Selected excerpts from the official site:
We maintain a decentralized mapping network and the underlying open mapping technologies — built by contributors worldwide.
Earn HONEY for Mapping
We maintain the open protocols and technologies that power the network — ensuring the map remains a public good, not controlled by any single entity.
Additional signals from the source:
- The homepage reinforces that the Foundation sees itself as the steward of both the network and the shared technology base.
Open protocols and technologiesis useful language because it points to software / standards stewardship, not only grants or branding.
4) Hivemapper homepage
Source: https://www.hivemapper.com/
Selected excerpts from the official site:
Hivemapper is a decentralized network of people, cameras, and apps mapping the world in real time.
The HONEY token rewards contributors who power the Hivemapper Network with fresh map data.
Additional signals from the source:
- The main homepage is better evidence for the project-layer note than for the entity note, but it is still useful as the baseline product frame the Foundation sits above.
- It helps keep the split honest: the project layer is mapping products, contributors, cameras, and data consumption; the Foundation layer is the governance, stewardship, and token-economic shell around that network.
Notes
- Hivemapper Foundation clears the bar for a separate entity note because the useful question is not only
how does the mapping network work?butwhich named entity shapes token economics, runs the MIP process, stewards open technologies, and handles hardware-certification policy? - The project note should stay focused on the mapping network, data products, contributor and customer mechanics, and the geospatial-control-plane design. The foundation note should stay focused on governance process, token-economics stewardship, open-technology maintenance, and the explicit Bee Maps-versus-Foundation boundary.
